For students who are not exactly sure of their college major and career goals, a liberal arts college can be an good choice because of the variety of programs offered. There are several excellent liberal arts colleges on the west coast. They range from large public universities to small, private, religious-based schools.
The University of California has several branches that are rated among the top public schools in the country, including Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, and Irvine. UC is known for its liberal approach to learning and wide variety of majors available such as English, criminology, and health sciences.
For those seeking a Catholic school, choices include: Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington; Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California; and Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California. Most private schools offer generous financial aid packages to ambitious students with high grades and an impressive application. Students should not automatically rule out colleges that might seem too expensive.
Pomona College in Claremont, California is one of the top liberal arts schools in the country. The school offers a very favorable student to faculty ratio and small class sizes.
