The Liberal Arts Colleges of the Southern States


There are several excellent liberal arts colleges in the southern United States. Within the large state of Texas alone, many public and private universities have highly ranked liberal arts programs, including: Baylor University, a private Baptist school in Waco; Rice University in Houston, which is the most selective college in Texas; the University of Texas at Austin, one of the largest public universities in the nation; and Texas A&M at College Station.

Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama is a public school that has over 140 programs of study and a strong chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. For those seeking a religious based school, choices include: Belmont University, a Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee; Loyola University New Orleans, which is Catholic; Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas; and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.

Several well known colleges in the south are consistently ranked among the top liberals arts schools in the nation, including: Duke University in North Carolina, which is also one of the nation’s top private universities; Florida State University in Tallahassee; the College of William and Mary in Virginia, the second oldest college in the country; and the University of Georgia in Athens, which has a highly regarded honors program for excellent students.
