Up Close & Personal
Sometimes the best way to decide if a college is a good match for you is simply to visit the campus in person.  Here are some options and suggestions for checking out campuses:

Tips for Visiting Colleges on Your Own
Colleges also welcome visits by individual students or families.  Most offer campus tours, information sessions, interviews, and even overnight dormitory stays with current student hosts.

Scheduling
While you can simply drop in, it is highly recommended that you schedule your visit in advance through the college's admission office.  While many people find it convenient to combine college visits with vacation travel, you should try to visit when classes are in session so that you can talk to current students and get a sense of everyday campus life.  Remember, university calendars vary widely, so planning ahead can help avoid arriving when the campus is empty or the admissions office is closed.

Showing Interest
In addition, arranging your visit through the college admission office allows that office track your interest in the college, which some colleges take into consideration when making admission and/or scholarship decisions.

P.S. It's also a good idea to send a personal thank you note after your visit.  Not only is this polite but also it is one more way for you to stand out in the admission counselors' mind.
